Minneapolis Heart Institute – Crosby
In January 2002, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center and Minneapolis Heart Institute celebrated the opening of Minneapolis Heart Institute-Crosby (MHI-Crosby). Three cardiologists, an internist, a nurse practitioner and a physician’s assistant provide a full range of specialty cardiovascular services and diagnostic imaging. They strive for excellence in all areas of heart disease - prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation - as they work to change the face of cardiovascular care.
The Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital is recognized internationally as one of the world’s leading providers of heart and vascular care. CRMC has partnered with Abbott Northwestern Hospital to establish a Level One heart attack protocol. Abbott Northwestern’s protocol, the first of its kind, creates a unique alliance that gives heart attack patients who fit established criteria a fast track to coronary angioplasty at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
Recently, MHI-Crosby cardiologists Dr. Peter Stokman, Dr. Timothy Dirks and Dr. James Madison, along with several outstate ER medical directors, including CRMC’s Dr. Rob Westin were among a small group of experts who authored a study released in the European Heart Journal. The study was based on the Minneapolis Heart Institute’s Level One database of patients who were treated at Abbott Northwestern from April 2003 through December 2009 and found that an organized regional heart attack care system such as that at Cuyuna Regional Medical Center can eliminate disparities in treatment between patients who live in urban and rural areas. By following the Level One protocol, it was shown that a patient suffering a heart attack who presents to CRMC’s ER in Crosby can have the same treatment outcome as one who presents directly to the ER at Abbott Northwestern.
Along with Dr. Peter Stokman, cardiologist, Dr. Timothy Dirks; interventional cardiologist, Dr. James Madison; and internist, Dr. James Furda are the physicians at MHI-Crosby.
